Happy Six Month Little Man!

In honor of Henry's six month birthday tomorrow, let's recap his little life so far... born January 29, 2010 at 12:21pm, weighing just 7 pounds and 5 ounces, 19.5 inches long. Henry has his 6 month check up next week so we'll get the exact totals then, but last time we weighed and measured, he was up to 18 pounds and about 25 inches long I believe!

Oliver and Henry have bonded and I can only imagine the trouble the two of them will get into as they older. Joe and I worked very hard to get Oliver to stop spitting (he does a sort of very exaggerated raspberry), only for him to find out that it makes Henry crack up. So yes, Henry is already laughing at Oliver when he does things he's not supposed to. And Oliver is happy to oblige - anything to make Henry laugh. Does jumping on the couch make Henry laugh, yes it does, so of course Oliver has to do it. It's a brotherly thing to do to entertain your sibling.

The two of them even worked together to ruin the carpet in the living room. On Saturday, Oliver spilled a water bottle filled with crustal light fruit punch. This left a lovely pink stain right in front of the couch. Then on Sunday, Henry got his poop all over the carpet. The yellow stain quite compliments the pink stain adjacent to it. Really, both incidents were more my fault, but I like to think they conspired to alleviate my responsibility for the incidents.

All kidding aside, it does make me very happy to see the smile on Henry's face when his big brother is around. And the relationship that is forming between Oliver and Henry is sweet. The other day I said something to Oliver about getting him out of the car before Henry, and he said to me, "mommy, don't leave him!"

Back to Henry. Some of the things Henry enjoys the most are his feet, his thumb, and pretty much anything else he can put in him mouth. Like his predecessor Oliver, he loves to be carried around as much as possible. He thinks it's fun when Dad hold his feet and hands together and swings him upside down (it's safer than it sounds, I promise). He doesn't like sitting in the stroller, having his clothes changed, and he frightens a little more easily than Oliver did at his age.

We're looking forward to starting food with him in the next week. Yay for rice cereal and a variety of vegetables and fruits! Henry has almost got sitting up under his belt, and he's working on becoming more mobile around the house. He gets around by crawling and wiggling, but it will be fun for him when he starts to crawl. Right now his attempts at crawling are Henry getting up on his knees and a face plant two seconds later.

It's amazing that someone who has been a part of our lives for such a short time has made much such an imprint on our hearts and who we are and forever will be. I know this is probably something that has been said before in other posts, but my children are such a blessing to us. I can't imagine life without them and I am so thankful everyday that God has blessed Joe and I with the task of caring for them (Ask me if I still feel the same way at 2:00 tomorrow morning or after carpet stain #3... hehe, I will.)

Oliver's 2nd Birthday

I know this is a bit old, but I found it on my computer and thought it was so cute. It's a nice little recap of how much Oliver has matured this past year. It's crazy to think in just 5 quick months he'll be three!

Couple more photos

If you're wondering where I got the Utah Rocks shirt, thank you Wal-Mart for our $1 souvenir.

Utah Pictures

You'll notice Oliver's more than thrilled face in the hoodoo picture. The entire day through Bryce Canyon, Ollie was exasperated anytime we said, say cheese. That was his face in every picture.

Cation(n): The Two Year-Old Pronunciation of Vacation

We just returned from a week-long trip to Utah and Las Vegas. When we first pulled up to the
house we would be staying in, in Duck Creek Village, Utah, Oliver said, "This is not cation." So anytime something happened outside of the plan, Oliver's quote was used by various people on the trip. For example, this is not cation when you are hiking back up the large canyon you hiked down half an hour ago in 100 degree weather.

Thankfully, cation was not always used in a negative light and there were many times when Oliver was happy to be on cation. I'm not sure if he'll remember all the cool things he got to do this week, but I guess we have the pictures to capture the memories and for now, and he still talks about our adventures from this week.

We went to Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park. Both were very cool and until you see it in person, I don't think you can appreciate how amazing God's creation really is. Oliver and Henry were both troopers with the hiking and hot weather in both parks. Joe wore Oliver in our hiking backpack (which I almost sold on Craig's List right before we left on our trip - thank goodness my common sense snapped back) and Henry cruised around in the Moby wrap.

In Zion National Park, we hiked the Narrows. This is a place where the canyon walls on both sides come together and the further up you hike, the more narrow the path between the walls is. The challenge to this hike though is the river you are walking in upstream. Many in our group thought sandals and flip flops would be adequate for this kind of hike, resulting in strangers catching our lost flip flops for us downstream a couple times.

Joe and I were so proud of Oliver's adventurous spirit when he decided he was going to hike back down the river by himself. He walked through the water, over rocks, in water sometimes neck deep on his little body. We were amazed that in so many ways he is fearless. Henry was great too, being strapped into the Moby for a couple hours with water gushing towards him.

Oliver also tried his hand at fishing for the first time. Although we didn't catch any fish, he had a blast reeling in the fishing line Joe cast out for him. This is good news for two of our childrens' grandparents who love to fish and have talked about the grandfather/grandson fishing trips of the future.

Tomorrow I have to go back to work and I am so bummed. We had such a fabulous time together as a family and with close friends. I am just so thankful for the amazing things we get to do together. We are so blessed to have each other and have good friends to share our lives with. Joe and I can't wait to take the boys back for another Utah cation when they will be able to hike up that river all on their own. We say maybe 8-10 years, which seems so far away, but in reality, will be here before we know it!
